Merry Christmas from the Nestoria Team!

Fellow Nestorphiles!

The year has been turbulent for everyone in the property industry, especially in our two biggest markets: the UK and Spain. Next week we’ll do a series of posts looking back on the year in a bit more detail, and of course discussing the challenges ahead. Nevertheless, we’ve managed to thrive in 2009 thanks to a lot of hard work from the team and the support of all of our partners. Many thanks to everyone for believing in us.

All work and no play makes for a very dull vertical search engine indeed. As such, last week, as in past years the Nestoria team headed to Bilbao for a chance to clear our heads, relax and celebrate our accomplishments. Unlike in past years, this time we didn’t go body boarding in the frigid sea. Instead we indulged in another Basque tradition – great cooking and great wine.

We divided into teams, each assigned to cook a different course in a Basque feast. Luckily we had the guidance of an experienced chef to steer us. We headed to the main Bilbao market to buy fresh ingredients, and then went to a traditional Basque gastronomic society, or Txoko, where we then began our cooking duel.

As you can well imagine, competition between the teams was fierce to earn the praise of the chef. Just like in property search, great ingredients alone was not enough, presentation and speedy delivery of the content, played a critical role in creating a great experience. In the end though I can confidently say that we all won as we enjoyed a great meal in great company.

Many thanks to our hosts in Bilbao for a memorable event, to the team for a fantastic year, to our loyal partners for their support in a tough year, and most of all to the users of Nestoria! We extend our best holiday wishes to all of you!

Nestoria at nonick09

Fellow Nestorpheliakis,

This week some members of the Nestoria team will be returning to terrain that we know well. We are glad to announce that we will be attending nonick09 in Bilbao on April 24th and 25th. We expect it will be as enjoyable (and much warmer) than past Nestoria outings to the Basque country.

Nonick09 is an international conference, held in English and with a focus on TV and web. It is the natural evolution of Blogak 2.0, held in Bilbao the past two years. In very little time, Blogak (which means blog in Basque) attracted major speakers such as Rob Malda (Mashable guru), Bernardo Hernandez (global head of geomarketing at Google) and Loic Le Meur (seesmic and LeWeb3).

The structure of nonick09 will be split amongst panels (with senior speakers of YouTube, DailyMotion, Nielsen), two competitions (Startup 2.0 and EuroBlogAwards), a new edition of the successful Facebook Developer Garage and some workshops inspired by the ones organized at DLD or SeedCamp. In short, there will be plenty of interesting thing to discuss, and no doubt the discussions with other attendees will be as fruitful as the set agenda.

If you are there please say hello (or “Hola” or “Kaixo”). A big thanks to the organisers, we look forward to seeing you all at nonick09!

Nestoria 2008 Winter festivities

Fellow Nestorianers,

we’ve once again reached that time in which it is natural to look back and reflect on the year that has passed. What went well, what have we accomplished, but also what could be done better in the future and what challenges lie ahead (hint: many). In the coming weeks we’ll be dashing off a few blog posts reflecting publicly on 2008, but last week was a chance for the team to step aside from the day to day pleasure of vertical search engine building and clear our heads for the year ahead.

In what has become a company tradition we headed down to the Basque country for a few days of celebration and contemplation. On the festive side of things, you will no doubt be glad to know that we managed to find several opportunities to sample the local cuisine, the wine, the culture and the nightlife.

Lokku hits the beach

Lokku hits the beach

Nevertheless, as always at Nestoria, the emphasis remains on hard work, and like in past years the highlight of the trip was a refreshing dip in the Bay of Biscay to focus on the challenges ahead. Few things channel concentration on the essentials like stepping into a roaring ice cold sea.
COLD!

COLD!

It’s hard to believe this was already our third annual company Christmas trip to Bilbao. Time flies, and as one of the company founders I was equally pleased by both the rousing speeches of the new team members that joined us over the past year, and by the attendance at our team dinner of a Lokku alumni; one of our past interns was able to join us (as an aside we remain continually on the lookout for engineering interns). Our team has grown a bit this year, but so too has the size of Nestoria, both in the UK and internationally – more on this in our next post.

The future will, like 2008, be very much about doing more with less, be it the scalability of our systems or to continue building and intensifying partnerships with like-minded companies and organisations. On the note, I’d like to explicitly thank all of our valued business partners (especially those that worked with us first, when we started with nothing – rest assured that we have not forgotten your bet on our tiny start up).

In this spirit, we wish all Nestoria blog readers and, most of all, all Nestoria users a happy and festive holiday season wherever these words may find you. Many thanks for your continual feedback and support. With your help we look forward to a fantastic 2009.

Nestoria Christmas event

Fellow Nestormen!

Last week the team behind Nestoria visited Bilbao in Spain for our annual company Christmas adventure. A great chance to escape from our day to day work of continually fine tuning property search relevance and instead reflect on both the things that have gone well over the last year and things we can do better in the coming year (more on this in a few posts next week).

What better way to refresh our thinking than our traditional body boarding dunk in the Bay of Biscay? Now you may ask “Dear God man! Isn’t it painfully cold to get in the North Atlantic at this time of year?”, and we will answer “Yes. It is painfully cold”. But such are the challenges we’re willing to endure to ensure we’re approaching property search with fresh thinking.

We look forward to presenting you a few of our new ideas in the coming year.

Best holiday greetings to you and your families from all of us here at Lokku!
