Regular Netorblogswotians (readers) know how we roll at Nestoria. We like our data. We like data that makes us smile even more.
So, in the vein of ‘funny data’ blog posts that have gone before, I bring you:
A list of Slightly Amusing UK place names
But before we get into the meat of the list, a bit of background on the story. Inspiration always comes from somewhere and in this case, it came from an angry group of locals in a Welsh border town. After reading this article about their desire to change a street name in their village name because of it’s lewd nature, we immediately began to hunt through our databases for similarly (if slightly less obscure) hilarious place names.
A list of Slightly Amusing UK place names
There’s some simply unfortunate names:
- - Nasty sounds like a nice place to settle down
- - fancy moving to Ugley town?
- - enjoy a fun-packed day’s house hunting at Great Snoring
- - those with strong bladders can consider a move to Loudwater
Then there’s the slightly more obscure (but still funny) names, that might take a little more thought:
- - We heard that if you never had chickenpox as a child, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in chignal-smealey
- - “No, this is not middle earth” - Wetwang Resident
We’ll stop there, before we get into the really good stuff.
If we’ve missed off your slightly amusingly-named place of residence, please let us know. If you happen to live in any of the places we’ve mentioned and are offended, we are very sorry, but also slightly amused.

How about ‘Barking’ in London?
Also, how do you ask if someone is from there?: “Are you Barking?”
